The Technical Balance – Intake vs. Exhaust

- Intake: This usually happens at your soffits (the underside of your eaves). As hot air rises and exits the top of the roof, it creates a vacuum that pulls fresh, cooler air in through the soffits.

As that meltwater runs down to the eaves (the edges of the roof which are colder because they overhang the house), it refreezes. This creates an ice dam.
Ice dams act like a literal dam, backing up water underneath your shingles and into your walls. By ensuring your attic is well-ventilated, the roof deck stays at a uniform, cold temperature, allowing snow to melt naturally or stay frozen, rather than creating the dangerous melt-refreeze cycle that leads to expensive interior water damage.
