Different Types of Asphalt Shingles: Which Level is Right for Your Idaho Home?

If you are walking through a neighborhood in Boise, Nampa, or Meridian, 90% of the homes you see are likely topped with asphalt shingles. They are the most popular roofing material in Idaho for a reason: they are cost-effective, durable against our 100°F summers, and capable of shedding heavy winter snow.

However, not all asphalt shingles are created equal. At Emerald Roofing Group, we categorize asphalt roofing into three distinct “levels.” Choosing the right level depends on your budget, how long you plan to live in your home, and how much “curb appeal” you want to generate.

In this guide, we’ll break down the different types of asphalt shingles and which one is the best investment for the Idaho climate.

Traditional 3-Tab Shingles (The Economy Level)

3-tab shingles were the industry standard for decades. They are made of a single flat layer of asphalt-coated fiberglass, cut into three uniform “tabs.”

  • The Look: Very flat, thin, and slate-like. They offer a “brick-layer” pattern on the roof.
  • The Pros: This is the most budget-friendly roofing material on the market. If you are flipping a house or looking for the absolute lowest entry price for a roof replacement, this is it.
  • The Idaho Drawback: 3-tab shingles typically have a wind rating of only 60 mph. In the Treasure Valley, where spring wind gusts can easily exceed that, 3-tab shingles are prone to “creasing” or blowing off entirely.
  • Lifespan: Expect 15–20 years in Idaho’s high-UV environment.

Architectural / Dimensional Shingles (The Standard Level)

Architectural shingles (also called “laminate” or “dimensional” shingles) are the #1 choice for Emerald Roofing Group customers. Unlike 3-tabs, these are made of two or more layers of shingles bonded together.

  • The Look: They have a textured, “3D” appearance that mimics the look of natural wood shakes. Because the tabs are random in size and shape, they hide imperfections in the roof deck better than flat shingles.
  • The Pros: They are significantly heavier and tougher than 3-tabs. Most architectural shingles carry a wind rating of 110–130 mph, which is essential for surviving Idaho’s windstorms.
  • The Value: While they cost slightly more than 3-tabs, they last nearly twice as long and offer a much higher return on investment for your home’s resale value.
  • Lifespan: Expect 25–35 years with proper attic ventilation.

3. Luxury / Designer Shingles (The Premium Level)

Luxury shingles are the “top shelf” of the asphalt world. They are extra-thick, multi-layered shingles designed to replicate high-end materials like natural slate or hand-split cedar shakes.

  • The Look: These shingles provide deep shadow lines and a massive “pop” of curb appeal. If you have a steep-sloped roof that is highly visible from the street, luxury shingles can completely transform the look of your home.
  • The Pros: They offer the highest impact resistance (Class 4), which is a huge benefit if we get a Idaho hailstorm. They are also much heavier, making them nearly impossible for wind to lift.
  • The Cost: You can expect to pay double or triple the price of a standard architectural roof.
  • Lifespan: Often rated for 40–50 years.

Why “Impact Resistance” (Class 4) Matters in Idaho

When choosing your asphalt shingle level, ask about Class 4 Impact Resistance. While Idaho doesn’t get as much hail as the Midwest, we do get occasional severe weather. Many insurance companies in Idaho offer a discount on your homeowner’s insurance premiums if you install a Class 4 shingle (which is common in the Luxury level and some high-end Architectural lines). Over 20 years, those insurance savings can actually pay for the price difference of the shingle!

Which Shingle Should You Choose?

  • Choose 3-Tab if: You are on a strict budget, it’s a rental property, or you’re in an area with very little wind.
  • Choose Architectural if: You want the best balance of price, durability, and a 30-year lifespan. This is our “Idaho Standard.”
  • Choose Luxury if: You have a high-value home, want the look of slate/wood, or want the absolute best hail protection available.
